Transition to high school

Starting high school is an exciting milestone. The move from Year 6 to Year 7 brings new experiences, greater independence and opportunities for students to learn, grow and make new connections.

We support our Year 6 students to feel confident and prepared as they take this next step in their education.

Choosing and enrolling in a high school

Cherrybrook Community of Schools

Our school is part of the Cherrybrook Community of Schools, working closely with Cherrybrook Technology High School (CTHS) to support a positive transition from primary to secondary school.

For students moving to CTHS, this connection provides opportunities to become familiar with the high school environment, learn more about what to expect in Year 7 and build connections before their first day.

Students moving to other high schools are equally supported throughout their transition to Year 7.

Learn more about Cherrybrook Technology High School

During Year 6, parents and carers are asked to indicate which high school they would like their child to attend in Year 7.

Every student is entitled to a place at their designated local public high school, which is determined by their residential address. Families can also express interest in other public high schools.

Before your child starts Year 7

Preparing for high school begins well before the first day of Year 7. Throughout Year 6, students have opportunities to build the confidence, independence and organisational skills that will help them adjust to secondary school.
Transition activities may include:
  • high school visits and orientation activities
  • opportunities to experience a high school environment
  • information about high school routines and expectations
  • opportunities to meet high school students and staff
  • support from primary and high school staff throughout the transition process.

Families will receive information about relevant transition opportunities throughout Year 6.
